Filled tortillas
What you need
- Tortillas
- Cooked chicken
- Grated cheese
- Mild salsa
- Lettuce
- Sour cream
- Peppers
- Cucumber
- Tomatoes
- Spoons
Preparation
- Cut up all the ingredients and place in small bowls
- Clean all the surfaces to be used, wash hands and put aprons on.
What to do
- Give each child a plain tortilla
- Show the children how to smear a little sour cream and salsa over it
- Now ask the children to decide what ingredients they would like to add to their tortilla, and show them how to place these in the centre
- Once the children have added all the ingredients they want help them with rolling the tortilla up, showing them how to do this with one you have made.
- Now you can enjoy them!
Prompts
Ask the children to name the colours of the ingredients as they add them to their tortilla. Ask the children what shape the plain tortillas are. Let the children taste the ingredients as they add them.. Tell the children that rabbits and tortoises like to eat lettuce and ask them where these animals. If you are carrying out this activity with older children, show them where Mexico is on a map and explain that the people who live there eat these.
Hints and tips
- Extend the range of ingredients you use.
- You could place the tortillas the children have wrapped on a baking tray and warm them gently in an oven, serve them as a snack
- Look at Mexican costumes including brightly coloured ponchos and sombreros.
